Kenneth ‘Papa’ Chisholm hits 100, celebrated across generations
Jamaican patriarch Kenneth “Papa” Chisholm on July 26 marked a rare and remarkable milestone, celebrating his 100th birthday, surrounded by family members and friends at a special gathering on Farmers Boulevard in Jamaica, Queens.
Chisholm’s granddaughter, Tiffany Jackson, told Caribbean Life on Monday, Aug. 4, that Chisholm’s life has “spanned generations, countries, and countless stories.” She said her grandfather, who was born and raised in St. Mary, Jamaica, is “he living embodiment of resilience, wisdom, and unwavering faith.
“Man of humble beginnings and strong values, he grew up in a time when life was simpler — but far from easy,” Jackson said. His journey was shaped by hard work in the fields, dedication to family, and a strong belief in better days ahead.
“Throughout his life, Papa carried with him strength and authority,” she added. “Whether he was guiding his children with firm wisdom or offering kind words to a neighbor, he became a pillar not just in our family, but in every community he touched.
“His life was grounded in honesty, humility, and a deep love for people, especially children,” she continued.
In honor of his centennial celebration, Jackson said Chisholm traveled from Jamaica — his lifelong home — to the United States, where generations of his family now reside.
“Relatives from across America and Canada joined the festivities, highlighting the powerful impact of immigration in binding families across borders and generations,” she said. “Our story is a shared testimony to how immigration doesn’t just change lives — it connects them. It builds bridges between countries, cultures, and hearts.
Adorned in black and gold, Jackson said the celebration “Shimmered with joy, elegance, and reverence for a man who has witnessed a century of change, growth, and love.” She said her grandfather wore a “stunning gold and black suit, complete with a crown, radiating royalty and pride as he sat among those whose lives he helped shape,” while the Abeng band played in the background, led by LeRoy Graham.
“It was a celebration fit for a king,” Jackson said. Seeing his children, grandchildren, great-grandchildren, and even great-great-grandchildren gather under one roof was a powerful testament to the seeds he planted and nurtured.
“The room overflowed with laughter, music, Caribbean food, memories, and stories — reminders that Papa’s legacy is not just in his years, but in the lives he has touched,” she added.
“His story is not just his own — it’s ours,” Jackson continued. “It is the story of migration, perseverance, and generational love. It’s the story of how one man’s life can anchor and inspire an entire family.
“As we celebrated his 100th year, we celebrated not just his age, but his impact,” she said. “Happy 100th, Papa! You are loved beyond measure. May your crown always shine.” Jackson said Chisholm has seven children (one deceased), 31 grandchildren, 21 great-grandchildren, and two great-great-grandchildren.
In his celebratory speech, Chisholm said: “Remember God, and give thanks no matter what life brings.
“My good family, may God bless and keep each one of you,” he added. “I am really happy about the way you have entertained me today.” “Today is the day I’ve been long, long waiting for,” Chisholm continued.
