Former T&T and West Indies cricketer Dwayne Bravo has been appointed as T&T’s ambassador of sport, joining a long list of distinguished athletes who have been bestowed with the honor.
The Minister of Sport and Youth Affairs, Phillip Watts, made the announcement recently during his post-cabinet contribution.
Speaking at the Diplomatic Centre in Port-of-Spain, Watts said, “Mr Dwayne Bravo has distinguished himself as one of T&T’s most celebrated sportsmen. He is internationally recognized as a premier cricketer, captain, and all-rounder, having represented the West Indies cricket team with distinction.”
“In addition to his cricketing accomplishments, Mr Bravo has also made significant cultural contributions through music and ambassadorship in promoting T&T worldwide.”
Bravo, 41, made his T&T debut in 2002 against Barbados, and made his One-Day International debut for the West Indies during England’s 2003/2004 tour of the Caribbean.
He retired from playing all forms of the game during the 2024 Caribbean Premier League, and was appointed head coach of the Trinbago Knight Riders (TKR) for the ongoing 2025 Caribbean Premier League.
Minister Watts added, “Mr Bravo has also proven to be an international figure who will benefit T&T through this new role.”
Bravo joins a list of T&T sport ambassadors that is dominated by former cricketers and track and field athletes which includes T&T sprinter and four-time Olympic medallist Ato Boldon, cricketer and world record holder Brian Lara, 1976 Olympic gold medallist Hasely Crawford, former T&T cricket captain Daren Ganga and former T&T football captain and current head coach Dwight Yorke, to name a few.
Dwayne Bravo said he is “deeply honored” to be appointed sports ambassador to TT and thanked Prime Minister Kamla Persad-Bissessar and Minister of Sport and Youth Affairs Phillip Watts for recognizing his contributions to the sport of cricket, and his cultural impact through music and international ambassadorship.
“Representing the red, white and black has always been a source of pride for me, whether on the cricket field, through music, or in any space around the world,” he said.
“This role is not just about me — it’s about inspiring the next generation and continuing to showcase the talent, culture and unity of our people. Together, let’s keep building a brighter future for TT.”
