Success behind the mask
Jean Joseph, the Dominican-born president of the Brooklyn Canarsie Lions Club, has described as “very successful” the club’s 5th Annual Masquerade Ball on Friday evening, Oct. 17, at 922 Remsen Avenue in the Canarsie section of Brooklyn.
Joseph, a certified public accountant, told Caribbean Life that the event — which was graced with the presence of US Representative Yvette D. Clarke and Assembly Member Jaime Williams—featured, among other things, mask-and-costume-wearing, entertainment, and mouth-watering Caribbean cuisine.
“It was an evening that celebrated community service, honor, and the remarkable individuals who continue to shape our neighborhood,” she said.
“The occasion not only highlighted gorgeous masks, regalia of dresses and good sumptuous food, but (it) also replicated the way in which the Brooklyn Canarsie Lions were able to unite in purpose to serve, while making positive impacts on the lives of others, and changing lives, not only in Brooklyn but also addressing some of the greatest challenges facing our world today,” she added.
The honorees were Yolaine Ridiore, treasurer of the 69th Precinct Community Council; Thafarie Thomas, a Jamaican-born women’s health nurse practitioner and aesthetic provider; Maria Nanton-Moses; Earl Satahoo, a real estate broker; Dr. Michel Jose Charles; Haitian-born 69th Precinct Community Council President Gardy Brazela; entrepreneur Cliff Roy; Council Member Mercedes Narcise; and Assembly Member Jaime Williams.

“Your work is more important now than ever,“ she told the ceremony. “We need to bind together; we have to organize; we have to mobilize. I’m so proud of the work you do.
“Honorees, you have been consistent,“ added the chair of the Congressional Black Caucus. “Service is the rent we pay for being on this earth.”
Williams, the Trinidadian-born representative for the 59th Assembly District in Brooklyn, expressed surprise at receiving the honor.
She congratulated her fellow honorees, singling out Brazela and thanking Joseph, saying they go “a very long way.“
“Jean and the leadership are doing a great job,“ added Williams, stating that Joseph “goes above and beyond“ in leading the Brooklyn Canarsie Lions.
In her prepared welcome remarks, Joseph said the celebration marked “another triumphant chapter in our journey—a celebration of unity, compassion, and benevolence among family, friends, colleagues, contributors, and well-wishers.
“This evening is more than a festive gathering; it is a powerful reminder of what we can achieve when we come together with a shared purpose,“ she said. “The funds we raise tonight directly support our community initiatives, helping us fulfill our mission of service and uplift those who need us most.
“As we reflect on the successes of the past year, we look ahead with hope and determination,“ Joseph added. “Your presence here—and your generous support—make a real difference in the lives we touch.
“To our distinguished honorees: congratulations on your well-deserved recognition,“ she continued. “Your dedication and impact inspire us all, and we are proud to celebrate your contributions tonight.
“With a stellar lineup of entertainment and music, joy is guaranteed,“ Joseph said. “But, even in our celebration, let us hold fast to the pledge we’ve made as Lions: to serve. That commitment is the heartbeat of everything we do. To each of you — no matter your field of endeavor — thank you for standing with us, believing in our mission, and helping us build a stronger, more compassionate community. Enjoy the evening, and may the spirit of service continue to guide us all.”
