Caribbean athletes shine in World Athletics championship
Saint Lucia’s sprint queen Julien Alfred captured a bronze medal in the 60 metres at the World Athletics Indoor Championships, crossing the finish line in a time of 7.03 seconds.
The event was won by Italy’s Zaynab Dossop in 7.00 seconds, with Jacious Spears of the USA second, also in a time of 7.03 seconds.
Jamaica’s Raymond Richards captured bronze in the Men’s high jump as he leapt a season’s best 2.26 metres to finish in a tie for third place with Korea’s Sanghyeok Woo.
The event was won by Oleh Doroshchuk of the Ukraine, who cleared 2.30 metres, with Mexico’s Erick Portillo taking silver after clearing the same height.
Jamaican sprinter Kishane Thompson ran his fastest-ever time in an indoor 60 metres to grab the silver medal.
Thompson clocked a personal best of 6.45 seconds to finish second behind Jordan Anthony of the USA in a world-leading time of 6.41 seconds. Trayvon Bromell finished third registering the same time as Thompson.
T&T’s Jereem “The Dream” Richards captured his third World Athletics Indoor Championship medal when he bagged bronze in the Men’s 400 metres finals crossing the line in 45.39 seconds.
The gold medal went to Canadian Christopher Morales Williams in a championship record 44.76 seconds. American Khaleb McRae picked up silver, clocking 45.03 to finish behind Williams and ahead of Richards.
At the 2022 World Indoor Championships in Belgrade, Richards won the 400m in a championship-record 45.00 seconds. In the most recent final, Williams broke that record by 0.24 seconds, becoming the first athlete to run under 45 seconds at the World Indoors.
