Haitian business partners show kindness to others through literacy
Ruth Fleury and Justine A.P. Louis, who are both of Haitian descent, are the founders of Scholars of Tomorrow Publishing (Fleury) and VivLiv Books (Louis). As they are both authors and educators, literacy is a crucial thing for both of them, and this is how they show kindness to their communities.
“Children need support with reading and writing. Some children lack interest in literacy for various reasons. Fellow authors/educators and I believe that children and the youth need books with representation in schools and in their home library,” Fleury explained.
Fleury remembers witnessing acts of kindness growing up often done by her parents and people in her community. “Everyone looked out for each other and helped each other as needed. Occasionally, when my parents needed child care for me, some neighbors watched me at their house,” Fleury recalled.
Similarly, Louis also witnessed acts of kindness done by family and friends growing up. “Some of those included caring for those in need through emotional and financial support, by offering to buy others meals, donating money or clothes to the less fortunate, helping someone in need with a task (such as the elderly, someone with a disability), and even checking in on those who are sick by offering support and a helping hand,” she stated.
In January, Fleury collaborated with Louis to host a literacy event, where she read her new book, “Soup Joumou Freedom Celebration,” about Haitian Independence Day. One of Louis’ children’s books, “Dalia Explores the Haitian Creole Alphabet,” was featured.
This is just one of many acts of kindness Fleury and Louis are currently doing. Fleury has supported parents with their young children by sharing strategies for early literacy and ways to connect with their children.
“In March, I collaborated with the co-owners of Canela Cafe Bar in Crown Heights to host a Family Literacy Night. It was amazing. The children and parents enjoyed the books, food and music,” Fleury continued.
Louis has also participated in mission trips to Haiti in the past and helped support children in schools by donating backpacks and school supplies. She has also donated toys, clothes and books to children from many parts of the world.
She continues to donate funds to a school community to help with snacks and beverages and to support causes in schools. I also give out prizes, toys, meals and books to school-aged children.
Both Fleury and Louis have had positive reactions to their acts from the community. “I enjoy making others happy and smile. I also sense great gratitude and appreciation for all the support that I provide to members in my community,” Fleury added.
Louis agreed with Fleury’s sentiment, stating that her contributions have “brought happiness, cheer, relief as well as growth.”
Fleury wants to have a legacy in her life that is one of inspiration, empathy, and positive impact in my family and the community. Louis would like to be remembered through her children’s books and stories.
“I would like for others to learn about their heritage and culture through my work and I hope that my books can be used as resources and guides for generations to come,” Louis added.
Fleury hopes to be remembered as someone who used their talents and passions to make a meaningful difference in the lives of others and contribute to the betterment of society.
Louis wants to inspire younger generations to also share their culture, stories and heritage with the world in any way that they wish to do so, whether through art, dance, leadership positions, media and more.
“I would like younger generations to continue to spread acts of kindness as this can make the world a better and happier place,” Louis stated.
