Key Suriname-Guyana clash highlights League B return
CONACAF said on Monday that the road to W Gold Cup resumes with three League B encounters on Wednesday.
It said Suriname will look to defend the top spot in Group A against the likes of Guyana and Antigua and Barbuda, while Dominica searches for its first three points of the season.
Over in Group B, Martinique and Nicaragua also will seek their first wins and one that could catapult them into the fight for first place.
Dominica vs. Antigua and Barbuda
Dominica welcomes Antigua and Barbuda at the Daren Sammy Cricket Ground in Gros Islet, St. Lucia.
“Looking to get its first point of the tournament, Dominica is back in a home match after falling to group leaders Suriname in their opening match and away at Guyana,” CONCACAF said. “Starr Humphreys had the most shots in the match against Guyana and could grab her first goal soon, after showing her capability to find the back of the net on three occasions in the qualifiers for the 2022 CONCACAF Women’s Championship.”
CONCACAF said Antigua and Barbuda is targeting its second victory after besting Guyana in its first encounter, followed by a narrow defeat at Suriname. Gabrielle De Suza scored twice in the 2-1 victory against Guyana, earning her a spot in the League B Best XI for September, and has a total of six shots to date.
Suriname vs. Guyana
CONCACAF said Suriname and Guyana square off for the top of Group A at the Dr. Ir. Franklin Essed Stadium in Paramaribo, Suriname.
With two victories in September, Suriname currently occupies first place with six points, CONCACAF said.
It said Andaya Lantveld scored in the 5-0 win at Dominica and converted from the penalty spot for the match-winner against Antigua and Barbuda, earning a spot in the League B Best XI.
“Guyana bounced back from a 2-1 loss at Antigua and Barbuda with a 5-0 win over Dominica. Brianne Desa scored in both encounters, while Jalade Trim and Otesha Charles each earned a brace in the latter match,” CONCACAF said. “A victory would lift Guyana into first place.”
Martinique vs. Nicaragua
Martinique and Nicaragua meet at the Pierre-Aliker Municipal Stadium in Fort-de-France, Martinique, CONCACAF said.
It said both sides ran into a potent El Salvador side, while Nicaragua fared better against Honduras by taking a draw.
“Separated by one point, both teams are looking to win their first match and jump into one of the top two spots,” CONCACAF said.
It said Prisca Carin scored the lone goal for Martinique in the month of September and will be looking to increase that tally. Goalkeeper Rene-Corail Mirella had 15 saves and 24 clearances in the first two encounters.
“Diana Lopez scored the Nicaragua goal that earned the nation a point against Honduras,” CONCACAF said. “Lisbeth Moreno provided the assist while having two shots and two clearances in that match.”
