Sukai brings Guyana greetings to Queens Phagwah
On March 29, plumes of multi-colored powder filled the air over Richmond Hill, Queens. A motorcade and thousands of participants then joined in observing the 38th Annual Phagwah (Holi) — the largest and most vibrant cultural festival in NYC — which was sponsored by the Federation of Hindu Mandirs, the Arya Spiritual Center, Inc., and the Phagwah Committee.
After the motorcade progressed along Liberty Avenue and concluded with a cultural presentation in Phil Rizzuto Park, Minister within the Ministry of Local Government and Regional Development, Hon. Pauline Sukai, congratulated the participants and delivered greetings from the President of Guyana, Dr. Mohamed Irfaan Ali.
“Happy Holi to the Hindu community, Happy Holi to New York City, and all the Caribbean and those who have supported you, your friends, and families. I bring from Guyana greetings to you on the celebration of this Phagwah parade, from His Excellency Dr. Mohamed Irfaan Ali, president of the Republic of Guyana, said the politician while addressing the large crowd.
“President Ali has built a One Guyana that is recognized by the global community. Guyana is a land that is diverse in population, ethnicity, culture, and religion,” said Sukai, adding “We stand as an example to the world where the meaning of Phagwah exists: unity, harmony, peace, and love. This is what we bring to you from Guyana. Just a few weeks ago, the Guyanese population celebrated Phagwah, demonstrating how Guyanese of all walks of life can come together to support our Hindu community.”
“It happens across Guyana for all our religious celebrations. Christmas is one of the biggest celebrations that brings us together as Guyanese. Diwali and Phagwah are celebrated, supported, and respected, and are national holidays in our country.”
Sukai also acknowledged Ramadan, Navratri, and Lent as religious holidays that showcase Guyana’s diversity before highlighting the transformation the Republic has undergone.
Turning to recent developments in Guyana, she continued, “For those who have recently visited our country, you would have seen the changes Dr. Ali’s government is producing for his people and the diaspora in New York. The diaspora has a place in our country. Many have responded to the call to visit, bring expertise, and invest.”
“Today I bring this brief message to you in love, harmony, and unity,” said Minister Sukai. She, along with Consul General to New York, Ambassador Michael E. Brotherson, walked in the parade as special guests.
Following Minister Sukai’s remarks, CG Brotherson expressed his delight at the Government of Guyana’s participation in this year’s event. He sees this as a sincere effort by the Government to enhance Diaspora relations and to support advocacy for and showcase Guyana’s culture and identity among Guyanese worldwide.
Ambassador Brotherson was especially delighted by the enthusiasm and commitment of his countrymen and women. They ensured that this significant event in Guyana’s cultural calendar was observed in New York, where the largest Guyanese community resides.
He was highly praised for the Government of Guyana’s representation at the celebrations. He noted that he was moved by the resounding cheers and visible excitement throughout the parade, especially when announcers and speakers mentioned His Excellency President Mohamed Irfaan Ali.
Concluding his remarks, Brotherson thanked the organizers for their tenacity and urged the Guyanese Diaspora to continue showcasing all things Guyanese, stay connected to their homeland, and be proud of the progress and unprecedented development Guyana continues to experience under the steadfast and selfless leadership of President Mohamed Irfaan Ali. He was accompanied at the event by Investment and Diaspora Initiatives Head Fazal Joe Yussuff and Consulate staff members, all under the One Guyana Banner.
