US government tells illegal Guyanese to leave
The US government is urging Guyanese living illegally in the US to leave or face legal consequences from the Trump administration.
This much was communicated to locals and loved ones in the diaspora by the foreign ministry, which has said that it is also encouraging nationals without documentation to exit the US, which is in the throes of a mass deportation exercise involving illegals in the US.
“Nationals currently residing in the United States illegally are strongly advised to depart immediately,” the ministry said in a statement, noting that the Government has received a diplomatic note.
“Guyanese nationals who enter the US without proper documentation or who overstay their periods of authorized entry or fail to respect the terms of their admission will be subject to the full extent of US immigration law including subject but not limited to arrest, prosecution, and imprisonment or heavy fines. Guyanese citizens are encouraged to pursue legal and authorized immigration, employment, education, and travel to the US. Nationals residing illegally in the US are strongly advised to leave immediately,” the ministry statement noted.
The statement came this week, just hours after a chartered plane from the US deposited seven nationals back to the country in what was described as a routine deportation of felons and an exercise that is not linked to the current mass deportation exercise by the Trump administration.
Oil and gas-rich Guyana has not been listed as a country with higher-than-usual illegal overstays so far. It is also not clear if other Caribbean Community nations have received similar diplomatic notes, as local authorities urge Guyanese to depart the US on their own terms.
“The U.S. continues to welcome legitimate and legal travelers. Secretary of State Marco Rubio has explicitly outlined that the government prioritizes the prosecution of offenses for illegal entry and illegal presence in the United States, as well as criminal offenses by foreign nationals.”
